Info

Though it bears the name of the psychedelic band Roky Erickson fronted in the 60s, this album is actually a vivid document of a later time in his career. Recorded at the Whisky a Go Go in 1981 by Erickson and his band the Aliens, songs like the snarling Stand for the Fire Demon and the menacing Dont Shake Me Lucifer are sterling examples of the punk-styled, horror-movie-influenced brand of garage rock that signaled Ericksons thrilling creative rebirth. The 13th Floor Elevators were an American rock band from Austin, Texas, United States, formed by guitarist and vocalist Roky Erickson, electric jug player Tommy Hall, and guitarist Stacy Sutherland. The band was together from 1965 to 1969, and during that period released four albums and seven singles for the International Artists record label. The Elevators were the first band to refer to their music as psychedelic rock, with the first-known use of the term appearing on their business card in January. All of the songs were written during Roky Erickson's Aliens days, none were done with the Elevators. This is a live recording, probably done at a club, when Roky was with the Aliens. If the radio spot, track 4, is an ad for this performance, then it was done at the Whiskey A-Go-Go in LA in 1980 or 1981. The 13th Floor Elevators were perhaps the inventors of psychedelic rock. Certainly they were among the very first to play it. Their first album, The Psychedelic Sound Of The 13th Floor Elevators International Artists, 1966, released in the spring of 1966, is one of the most fascinating of the acid age, the archetype of psychedelia. The album presents a collection of acid ballads that feed on sound effects Reverberation, on ethereal folk-rock Splash, on rhythmic boogie You're Gonna Miss Me, and on down-and-dirty improvisation above all Roller Coaster, but also Fire Engine. Roky Erickson was by now incapable of recording, but a deluge of albums kept up with the cult
