The Evil One is a solo album by former 13th Floor Elevators singer Roky Erickson released in 1981. The songs were recorded in 1979 with producer Stu Cook, former bass player of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Some material from those sessions was also released on the 1980 CBS UK album Roky Erickson and the Aliens, later reissued as I Think of Demons. Cook played bass on two tracks, Sputnik and Bloody Hammer. Roky Erickson's The Evil One is a classic album, and this vinyl release does it justice. The interior booklet is worth the price of admission alone as it details the hardships of creating this album due to Roky's deteriorating mental state and lack of funds, a true tale of commitment and art. Of The. 25,624 listeners. garage rock. Different from the 13th Floor Elevators' psychedelia, Roky Erickson devotes himself to writing and coming up with lyrics which resemble old horror flicks. View wiki. September 9, 2013 8:35PM ET. David Fricke. Erickson, the bleating voice of psychedelic pilgrims the 13th Floor Elevators, was only a few years past a ruinous stay in a Texas mental hospital when he made this improbably magical 1980 LP, first issued in the U. as Five Symbols and produced by Creedence Clearwater Revival's Stu Cook. His band, the Aliens, had the Elevators' surging glow, too a most welcome spirit. Popular on Rolling Stone. In This Article: Roky Erickson. Want more Rolling Stone Sign up for our newsletter. Light In The Attic are currently reissuing the Roky Erickson solo records of the 1980s: including arguably one of his best works ever The Evil One. Forming his new band The Aliens in 1979, Erickson released The Evil One as a kind of overlapping suite of songs with predeceser I Think Of Demons, produced and helmed by former Creedance man Stu Cook. Roky was by this time extremely unwell he believed an alien inhabited his body and had developed an obsession with the mail. He was writing to random people, alive and not, and was ultimately charged with stealing other peoples mail which he claimed not to have opened, merely pinned to his wall
