So dubbed because these three sessions - two from early 1949, one from March 1950 - are where the sound known as cool jazz essentially formed, Birth of the Cool remains one of the defining, pivotal moments in jazz. This is where the elasticity of bop was married with skillful, big-band arrangements and a relaxed, subdued mood that made it all seem easy, even at its most intricate. After all, there's a reason why this music was called cool it has a hip, detached elegance, never getting too hot, even as the rhythms skip and jump. Jazz 1957. Recorded in three sessions from 1949 to 1950, it was the beginning of Miles Daviss recording career, as well as his storied collaboration with arranger Gil Evans. In a broader sense, the album also was the first shot in what was soon called the cool jazz or West Coast sound of the 50s, which ran contrary to the hot bebop and Latin jazz happening in New York City. The unorthodox nonet that Davis brought to the Royal Roost in 1948-featuring bebop confreres like Max Roach drums and John Lewis piano as well as forward-thinking Thornhill alums like Lee Konitz alto saxophone and Gerry Mulligan baritone saxophone-did in fact represent something new in modern music.
