De La Souls 3 Feet High and Rising was released on March 3, 1989 through Tommy Boy Records. It peaked at 24 on the Billboard 200 and 1 on Billboards Top R&BHip-Hop Albums charts. We made the whole of 3 Feet High and Rising for 13,000, using just a Casio RZ-1 drum machinesampler and another gadget called an Eventide harmonizer, which allowed us to match songs that had totally different pitches we could put Daryl Halls voice over a Sly and the Family Stone record. It was amazing. Ghetto Thang. 3 Feet High and Rising. Your Rating. De La Soul were making a point about the power of culture to mobilize people to action or immobilize them with fear. It was an idea they explored more explicitly on their fable, Tread Water. By contrast, the processes of sampling and layering on 3 Feet High and Rising and other hip-hop classics of that era demonstrate the opposite: expansively, giddily democratic-Delacratic, even-values. Poss production on Eye Know put Steely Dan into conversation with Otis Redding and the Mad Lads, his work on Say No Go Hall and Oates with the Detroit Emeralds. Album by De La Soul. Me Myself and I. Not Just Knee Deep by Funkadelic 1979. Three Is a Magic Number by Bob Dorough 1973. Five Feet High and Rising by Johnny Cash 1959. Different Strokes by Syl Johnson 1967. see 15 more connections. De La Souls 1989 effort, 3 Feet High and Rising, is a serious contender despite how lighthearted it is. This was made before the, horribly constructed, sample clearance process became 100 mandatory in releasing commercial music. It was, unfortunately due to that and Tommy Boy record label, that you may never hear the album. It is not available to stream or download, was never reprinted, and plans for re-release have effectively been halted as of 2019. nitty gritty starts here. 3 Feet High and Rising is the happiest and weirdest Hip-Hop has ever been without making sacrifices
