Darker, colder and more aggressive than anything they have done in the past, but no less critically acclaimed than their other full-lengths. Eirian Although it has its moments and is rarely boring, Marrow of the Spirit is far from Agalloch's best work. It's a rough album, in terms of both songwriting and sound quality, and ultimately forgettable. 35 Favorite track: Black Lake Niðstång. el merko. Marrow of the Spirit is the fourth studio album by American metal band Agalloch, released on November 23, 2010. Marrow of the Spirit marked a change in record labels for Agalloch. Their first three full-length albums and EPs were released by The End Records, but after their contract was completed with the release of Ashes Against the Grain in 2006, the band opted not to renew it. Marrow of the Spirit was released by Profound Lore Records, which had also released the first two Agalloch albums on vinyl. Agalloch's fourth studio album is an interesting followup to 2006's Ashes Against the Grain. Marrow of the Spirit is nowhere near as distorted or heavy, but the band manages to overcome that with a lot more melody, dynamics, and acoustic instrumentation. Marrow of the Spirit. The album was recorded entirely in analog on vintage equipment at Audible Alchemy Studios in Portland, Oregon, with Steven Wray Lobdell of Faust producing. On October 29th, The track The Watcher's Monolith was released on the music website Stereogum accompanied by an interview with John Haughm. The track Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires was released via Vivahaterecords on November 1st. The album was named among NPR's Top 50 albums of 2010 and was also name. Marrow of the Spirit is gloomier and more black metal influenced than anything the band had done in over a decade but outside of Black Lake Niðstång it would be far-fetched to call the album challenging. Agallochs trademark acoustic melodies, hard-hitting riffs and nature-worshipping atmosphere are still there but this time around Haughm & Co. arent as joyful. Although the album has faced criticism for being disjointed and full of bland melodies, it truly sounds the opposite of that to me. Marrow has a more raw sound yet it is highly enjoyable and sensible in every way, exactly as Haug. Marrow of the Spirit begins, as have each of Agalloch's three previous LPs, with a reflective instrumental. A forlorn cello moans over field recordings of a brisk stream and chattering birds, mixed so that each element feeds into the others. Together, they offer an image of melancholy, energy, and beauty that serves as a prelude in the most proper sense. Agalloch deals in light and dark here, moving beyond simple damnation and apocalypse to consider escape and renewal, too. Through a series of sketches and scenes, frontman John Haughm offers desolation and collapse- I slumber in cl. Album 2010 6 Songs. Metal 2010. They Escaped the Weight of Darkness. Into the Painted Grey. The Watcher's Monolith. Marrow of the Spirit, Agalloch's fourth album, is the band's defining statement and the first Metal release of the new decade that can truly be considered a masterpiece. Darker, colder and more aggressive than anything they have done in the past, it is their most accomplished work to date. Quite simply, Marrow of the Spirit is Agalloch at the height of their powers.
