Public Strain is the second and final album by Canadian rock band Women. The album was produced by Chad VanGaalen. It was released in 2010 on VanGaalen's Flemish Eye record label in Canada, and on Jagjaguwar in the United States. Two songs on the album are direct references to the artist Ray Johnson: Locust Valley is the name of the town where Johnson lived in New York. Venice Lockjaw is a phrase Johnson incorporated in pins that he gave away at the 1990 Venice Biennale. Johnson was also. Public Strain was recorded alongside producer Chad VanGaalen, who also helmed Women's self-titled record. His production is chilly and thin- possibly a nod to the early-80s indie bands that Women hold in high regard. Or maybe it was just the weather-the sessions were conducted in Alberta, Canada during the dead of winter. At first listen, Public Strain is impenetrably cold. But deep down, beneath the blizzard of noise and hiss, something's burning. Two years in the making, Public Strain is more drastic than the debut in that the darker parts are more abrasive, the releases of tension are more pleasing, and the shimmering, steel-plate melodies are more evocative. Theres a huge sense of depth to the album, especially for one locked in a genre that tends to be minimal. Jarring, jangly guitar chords are stacked upon countless layers of vocals, bass, drums, and cello, all dripping with distortion and reverb. Genre: Post-Punk. The group's sophomore effort, Public Strain, pushes forward in both directions- the hooks are noisier, the noise is hookier, and both are fogged over with enough reverb to make Felt records seem bone-dry by comparison.
