Info
West Africa in the 1970s. There was Soundway's so far three-part Nigeria Special series, which gathered a bountiful collection of highlife, Afrobeat, funk, rock, and disco, and they followed it up with the eye-opening Sir Victor Uwaifo compilation Guitar Boy Superstar. But even amidst all those releases, Nigeria 70: Lagos Jump isn't an afterthought- it is, after all, the followup to one of the most crucial Afrobeat comps, 2001's Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of 1970's Funky Lagos. This is the complete Nigeria 70 The Definitive Story of the 1970s Funky Lagos album, Disc Two in full fidelity. On this disc we have: 01 - Orlando Julius. Various Artists. Nigeria 70 The Definitive Story of 1970s Funky Lagos. Originally released in 2001, the album followed the death of Fela Kuti and a renewed interest in original Afrobeat among younger club-goers. Put together over a three-week trip to Lagos, it documented for the first time the explosive era when domestic bands fused traditional highlife and juju with funk, soul, rock and Disco. As well as being a valuable document of an under-rated era, Nigeria 70 was one of the first crossover albums to dig deep into the African music archives and effectively market the music to a new online audience hungry for rare grooves and unique dancefloor sounds. Nigeria 70 - Lagos Jump - 2008. It was the sound of post-independence Nigeria, a time of celebration and wealth but, ultimately, of political oppression. The music reflected the times - a heady mix of traditional rhythms and big band highlife with the new rock, soul and jazz sounds crackling through transistor radios from Europe and the U. The rulebook of Nigerian musical heritage was ripped up as SANTANA, THE BEATLES and JAMES BROWN became as relevant to young players as HARUNA ISHOLA, VICTOR OLAIYA and E. Nigeria 70 - Sweet Times: Afro - Funk, Highlife & Juju from 1970s Lagos. Jan 2011. Mar 2009. Nigeria 70 - Lagos Jump. Then, riding a wave of global interest in Afrobeat at the turn of the century, the label partnered with Afro archivistobsessive Duncan Brooker to dig deep into Nigerias fertile 1970s scene - a scene centered in Lagos and as ebullient as it was insidious as excess, wealth and a newfound nightlife flourished thanks to recently discovered oil revenues. Now re-released after the original collection went out of print in 2003, Nigeria 70 is the sound of this scene and the outstanding West African artists who comprised it and often played into the wee hours of the morning. There's nothing inherently off about his Jason Mraz's new album
