Koerner Hall in Toronto, Canada, is one of North Americas most beautiful and acoustically superb concert halls. KUNÉ Canadas Global Orchestra was developed from a major initiative by The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto to explore and celebrate Canadas cultural diversity and pluralism. The ensemble seeks to communicate in ways that words, politicians, and spiritual leaders cannot, and help to find a common language through music. Originally known as the New Canadian Global Music Orchestra, the ensemble launched in Koerner Hall in June 2017 and toured Canada with stops in Ottawa, Calgary, London, Guelph, and Montréal. The earliest jazz musicians in Canada were of American origin and appeared on vaudeville stages and in cabarets in the mid-to-late 1910s. The Original Creole Orchestra, a New Orleans ensemble that included the cornetist Freddie Keppard, toured the Pantages circuit in Western Canada in 1914 and 1916, and Jelly Roll Morton performed in Vancouver cabarets as early as 1919 and as late as 1921. Scant evidence survives of the first Canadian jazz bands and musicians. The discographer Jack Litchfield has identified the pianist Harry Thomas as Canada's earliest jazz musician on the basis of the improvisational content of Thomas' ragtime recordings from 1916. Peter Oundjian and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra perform O Canada.
