The Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15, is a work for piano and orchestra completed by Johannes Brahms in 1858. The composer gave the work's public debut in Hanover, the following year. It was his first-performed orchestral work, and in its third performance his first orchestral work performed to audience approval. This concerto is written in the traditional three movements and is approximately 40 to 50 minutes long. Maestoso D minor. Performer: Rudolf Serkin. Orchestra: Philadelphia Orchestra. Conductor: Eugene Ormandy. My all time personal favorite Brahms 1st Concerto with Serkin at the keyboard remains an early stereo recording with Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orch. There was a thrilling version on 78s from the early 1940s with Reiner and the Pittsburgh Symphony. Lacking those, this famous collaboration with Szell will surely do. The Severance Hall acoustic can barely contain the sound these artists produce, and it borders on harshness. The stereo remake of Strauss' Burleske lacks nothing in opulent sound. Beethoven Rudolf Serkin, Eugene Ormandy, The Philadelphia Orchestra. Brahms composed his first piano concerto in 1858, and premiered the work in Hannover the following year. Although nowadays Brahms is often remembered for his full-blooded, large-scale works, at the time of writing his Piano Concerto No. 1 in 1858, he was a very different composer. Brahmss comfort zone was music for solo piano. Indeed, it was the music that book-ended his life. And this particular work was his very first creation for the instrument on a more epic scale. Never before had Brahms composed something with such depth, orchestration and duration. Its not surprising, then, that his Pi
