Info
Einstein on the Beach is an opera in four acts framed and connected by five knee plays or intermezzos, composed by Philip Glass and directed by theatrical producer Robert Wilson who also collaborated with Glass on the work's libretto. The opera eschews traditional narrative in favor of a formalist approach based on structured spaces laid out by Wilson in a series of storyboards. The music was written in the spring, summer and fall of 1975. Glass recounts the collaborative process: I put Wilson. Einstein on the Beach breaks all of the rules of conventional opera. Instead of a traditional orchestral arrangement, Glass chose to compose the work for the synthesizers, woodwinds and voices of the Philip Glass Ensemble. Non-narrative in form, the work uses a series of powerful recurrent images as its main storytelling device shown in juxtaposition with abstract dance sequences originally by Andrew de Groat, and for the 2012 version by American choreographer Lucinda Childs. Music and Lyrics by Philip Glass Robert Wilson, Design & direction The Philip Glass Ensemble Michael Riesman, conductor. Nonesuch 79323-2. A recording cannot capture the spectacular visual imagery that Robert Wilson devised for Einstein on the Beach but it should be said immediately that this was much more than the usual uneven collaboration between a librettist and composer. Glass avoided all vestiges of plot in the piece and dug deep into his quiver of repetitions to create an artfully unnerving five hours of brilliance. Verified Purchase.
