By that time, tapes of live radio broadcasts had become very sophisticated, and though no match for the superb studio productions of the time, were still more often then not quite listenable. Not so in the case of this Golden Melodram release featuring Carlos Kleiber leading the Stuttgart State Opera Orchestra. Wagner's composition of Tristan und Isolde was inspired by his affair with Mathilde Wesendonck and the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer.
