Instead of following through on his storming, honking '50s and '60s R&B, Watts decided to take things in a different direction, toning things down a bit and concentrating on mellow grooves. There are a couple of uptempo workouts, of course, but the songs that make a lasting impression on Return of the Thin Man are the slower, conversational pieces that are warm, relaxed and friendly.
