Info

The Thin White Duke was the persona and character of English musician David Bowie during 1975 and 1976. He is primarily identified with Bowie's 1976 album Station to Station and is mentioned by name in the title track. However, Bowie had begun to adopt the Duke persona during the preceding Young Americans tour and promotion in 1975. The persona's look and character are somewhat based on Thomas Jerome Newton, the titular humanoid alien played by Bowie in the 1976 film The Man Who Fell to Earth. The Thin White Duke was one of David Bowie's many personas. He portrayed the persona from 1975 to 1976. The character appears in the 1976 album Station to Station, in the film: The Man Who Fell To Earth, on the 1976 Isolar tour, on the cover of the album Low and in the song Lazarus as a final goodbye to the character. Bowie played this character at the peak of his drug use while living in Los Angeles. But I ended up loving basically the whole album. Favorite track: Modern Love. Anders Thunell. Music photographer Andrew Kent is paying homage to Bowie with a new book, David Bowie: Behind the Curtain, that chronicles two years of the artist's early career, when he assumed the persona of the Thin White Duke. After being introduced by Rolling Stone magazine's reporter, Cameron Crowe, in 1975, Kent travelled around the globe with Bowie during his Isolar tour in support of the Station to Station album in 1976. Kents pictures capture not only the showman in public, but the rare private moments of solitude and candidness of the young ever-morphing Bowie. Thin White Duke got no dramatic death like Ziggy Stardust however. He had no public retirement, instead the character just faded away and became a demon of sorts forever lingering in Bowies past. Later in life Bowie would refer to that period as the darkest of his life, calling the Duke a nasty character indeed. And while he brought upon a twisted darkness, the Thin White Duke is also responsible for some of the best music that David Bowie ever made. Related Posts. In 1975, David Bowie moved to Los Angeles, and his life descended into chaos and turmoil. He was consuming massive amounts of cocaine, remaining awake for days on end I hate sleep, he said. I would much prefer staying up, just working, all the time , and subsisting primarily on a diet of peppers and milk. The songs on the album he recorded that year, Station to Station, were born from this madness and ended up transcending it as well. Bowie would later refer to this period as singularly the darkest days of my life. Describing the time during a 1999 taping of the VH1 Storytellers series, he claimed it was so steeped in awfulness that recall is nigh or impossible.
