Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye MFR born 22 September 1946, known professionally as King Sunny Adé, is a Nigerian jùjú singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is regarded as one of the first African pop musicians to gain international success, and has been called one of the most influential musicians of all time. For his longevity, fluid moves, boundless stage energy and vast collaborative variety, he is Africa's Mick Jagger. The Aura album is more experimental, with electronic percussion mixed in with the talking drums, and doesnt have quite the same intensity. Even so, there are some great songs here, with a rousing burst of harmonica from Stevie Wonder on Ase, percussion from the great Tony Allen on Oremi, and further reminders of King Sunnys skills as a guitarist on the stirring Gboromiro. These albums helped to change Western attitudes to African music back in the 80s, and its great to hear them once again. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Licence. Since then I've listened to more Sunny Ade, and while this is a great record, I'd recommend others of his like the breakthrough first Island album Juju Music, or especially his earlier stuff on the African Songs or Sunny Alade labels from Nigeria. Those albums can be hard to get a hold of, but there is a surprising amount of material on YouTube accessible for a listen. This is definitely a more produced, more Westernized album than much of King Sunny's other material, which gives credence to the quotations from King Sunny about why he left the Island label.
