He has collaborated with British artist Chris Shen to explore the phrase In The Wild as a catalyst for the spatial and technological reproduction of sound and video. Crafted with artist Chris Shen, the album is a spatial wonder, reflecting the outdoor nature of its title with a soundfield that sounds like the great outdoors. Pillowy, cloudlike melodies echo and fade, or sometimes get swept away by the wind, and there's nothing up-front or in your face about it, as everything sounds crystal-clear but at least five feet away from the virtual microphone. Drew Lustman, also known as FaltyDL, is an American, New York-based record producer and American electronic musician originally from New Haven, Connecticut. In November 2008, he signed with electronic music label Planet Mu, who released his first two full-length albums, Love Is A Liability 2009 and You Stand Uncertain 2011. In January 2011, he signed with London-based label Ninja Tune, who released Atlantis 2011 and the single Straight & Arrow 2012, which features a remix by Four Tet. Electronic Dubstep. I mention this anecdote only because In the Wild, Drew Lustman's fourth LP under the alias, follows a surprisingly similar principle. Breaking all the established rules of album pacing, it moves in fits and starts, a tangled succession of intros, interludes, and outros, with the occasional song thrown into the mix. It's perpetually on the edge of getting started-except when it isn't, and then it's winding down just halfway through. Five of its 17 tracks are less than two minutes long, and even some of its longer cuts feel like extended interludes.
