The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale is a collaborative studio album featuring Eric Clapton and a host of other musicians. It consists of covers of songs by J. Cale, who had died the previous year. It was named after Cale's 1972 single Call Me the Breeze. It was produced by Clapton and Simon Climie. The guests invited on the album include Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler, Willie Nelson and Albert Lee. In a sense, nearly every album Eric Clapton recorded after 1970 has been a tribute to J. Eric Clapton has often stated that JJ Cale is one of the single most important figures in rock history, a sentiment echoed by many of his fellow musicians. Cales influence on Clapton and many of todays artists cannot be overstated. The album is an appreciation of Cale's music, his legacy, so there are no dramatic reworkings of the songs, just superbly played and performed covers, sixteen choice ones, mainly from Cale's earlier albums. Don White who played with J J is involved as is Cale's wife Christine Lakeland, not only with her husbands band but some fine solo albums, she joins Clapton on one song and plays guitar on another. Clapton repaid his debt to Cale once with their 2006 collaboration, The Road to Escondido, and he takes that idea a step further with this tribute album, conceived at Cales funeral last year. Claptons renditions can be a little too faithful: He nails Cales throaty growl on Cajun Moon, but the track fades out just as it might have opened up into a Dead-style jam Lies, sung with John Mayer, could have benefited from the charismatic delivery of a vet like Dr. John or Leon Russell.
