The Sun Moon & Herbs is a 1971 studio album by New Orleans R&B artist Dr. John, noted for its contributions from Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, and other well-known musicians. It was originally intended to be a three-album set but was cut down to a single disc. The album was his first album to reach the Billboard 200 charts. Teaser and The Firecat. The Sun, Moon & Herbs. View All. If Dr. John could produce 12 three-minute nuggets on the next album - without betraying his New Orleans heritage -the result would not only be ideal, but just what the world needs: a little more voodoo. Album 1971 7 Songs. Starting with the horn-driven character study Black John the Conqueror, a hypnotic timelessness characterizes this swinging nightmare of an album. John's in heavy hoodoo mode, recording in London with Eric Clapton and other glamorous A-list guests. Side two's Familiar Reality suite becomes increasingly arcane as a slithering slide guitar, malingering congas, clandestine whispers, and a witches' coven of backing singers take listeners deep into Dr. John's disorienting backwaters. The Sun, Moon and Herbs Dr. Originally intended as a triple album, The Sun, Moon & Herbs was chopped up, whittled down and re-assembled into this single-disc release, and while Dr. John never liked this version much, perhaps the single disc is testament to the less is more theory. The seven cuts are all quite lengthy and the spells Dr. John and his consorts weave are dark and swampy. Black John the Conqueror comes from old Cajun folklore which the good Dr. has modernized and given a beat. Songs in album Dr. John - The Sun, Moon & Herbs 1971. John - Black John The Conqueror.
