The Symphony No. 11 in G minor, Op. 103 subtitled The Year 1905, by Dmitri Shostakovich was written in 1957 and premiered by the USSR Symphony Orchestra under Natan Rakhlin on 30 October 1957. The subtitle of the symphony refers to the events of the Russian Revolution of 1905. However, the music may also reflect the Soviet invasion of Hungary, as the symphony was composed in the aftermath of the events. Shostakovich himself was quoted saying don't forget that I wrote the symphony in the aftermath. 11 in G Minor, The Year 1905 - Leopold Stokowski, Houston Symphony Orchestra, Dimitri Shostakovitch. Symphony No 11 in G minor, Year 1905 Op 103 by Dmitri Shostakovich Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra Yevgeny Mravinsky, conductor. 103, The Year 1905: II. The Ninth of January Allegro-Adagio-Allegro, Pt. Leningrad Philharmonic, Evgeny : Symphony No. 11, The Year 1905 - Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Peter Oundjian, Dimitri Shostakovitch. The Year 1905. The Eleventh Symphony in G minor, op. 103 1957, is dedicated to the events of the first Russian revolution of 1905. The most important compositional characteristic of the work lies in the fact that almost all of its thematic material is formed from songs that were popular at the time of the 1905 revolution. In contrast to most of Shostakovichs previous symphonies, the Eleventh premiered in Moscow, instead of in Leningrad: on 30 October 1957, the USSR State Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Natan Rakhlin performed it in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. This is a quite magnificent performance. No western recording can match Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic at the peak of their powers in this terrifying symphony. Very similar transfer to that available on Russian Disc for a short time. Not for the faint-hearted. 103 The Year 1905: I Adagio Palace Square, Symphony No. 11 In G Minor, Op. 103 The Year 1905: II Allegro 9 January and more. 4 tracks 60:07.
