His last recording was that of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 12, made in 1984, found on Disc 3 here. His interpretations of Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky were highly regarded, so it's not surprising that several of their symphonies are here. There are also symphonies by Mozart and Beethoven in this set tone poems by Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky and orchestral excerpts from operas by Wagner, Glinka, and Glazunov. Mravinsky never hesitates to take risks, no matter how bold. Some of them are highly successful and some are not, but the sheer emotion put forth is truly something to behold. Don't buy this recording if you're looking for a technically flawless rendition there are plenty of pitch problems and some ensemble difficulties, as well. This recording is the last one by Mravinsky of this symphony that he had himself premièred with the same Orchestra in 1947 and was dedicated to him by the composer. This recording was first released by Philips Ref: 422 442-2, now unavailable but apparently it was produced with an incorrect pitch.
