The two pianos are packed into the center of the soundstage, which can't be hleped under orchestral conditions, but I wish we could hear more of Bartok's precise seating instructions. Tempos are normal until the finale, where Rattle treats Allegro ma non troppo as a racing Presto. Katia and Marielle have expanded the repertoire for two pianos and percussion with works such as the first instrumental version of West Side Story, transcribed by Irwin Kostal orchestrator of the original musical, and the version for two pianos and basque percussions of Maurice Ravel's Boléro.
