Âme - Fabric 42 You might not associate the creators of 2005's ubiquitous milky way jam, Rej, with musty old school funk and techno. But in creating Fabric 42, Âme's Kristian Beyer and Frank Widemann dug into their collection in an attempt to step out of their deep house shadow a bit. As such, perhaps more than any mix this year, Fabric 42 is reminiscent of The Mole's As High as the Sky. With its vintage jazz, funk and house, the mix mirrors the way The Mole seemed to compact weathered sources and sounds into a humid mix of variable heritage. FABRIC 42 2008 continues to map the duos journey, mixing in dub, jungle, and trance influences over bouncing 44 beats as steady and sustaining as a heartbeat. Hear the Sun, Something is Raw, and We Said Nothing are among the albums several highlights, and the whole should appeal to fans of house, trance, IDM, and dance music with a creative edge. To my ear, fabric42: Ame took a minute to get going, but once it did, I found my head nodding up and down, my shoulders swaying slightly, and my toe tapping the floor. The groove was in the pocket, and I found myself getting lost in the sound a bit, rewinding parts of the mix to listen again and again. This was in the first 35-40 minutes. Unfortunately, I wish I could say the same for the last 25 minutes or so of the mix, which to me became tracky and bland.
