He has so much to put in his music that his songs are almost never shorter than seven minutes long. The thing I love most about Xasthur is that there is an unbelievable amount of emotion in the music its mind blowing and Ive only heard a small handful of others that can do that. Malefic claims that Burzum is the one that inspired his one-man approach to his project Xasthur. It's hardly been a case of overnight success, but 2006's Subliminal Genocide arguably confirms the arrival of Xasthur, and its one-man mastermind, Malefic, as one of America's - indeed the world's - most respected and prolific black metal visionaries. Strange things are a foot in the bowels of hell: After more than a decade of eluding non-metal ears, Xasthur has stepped outside the extreme music tinderbox for his bone-rattling fifth album, Subliminal Genocide. Comprised solely of Scott Conner, aka Malefic, Xasthur's U. black metal first received crossover attention for contributions to Sunn 0's Black One: Malefic's coffined presence, along with vocal work by fellow Twilight traveler Leviathan aka Wr. Subliminal Genocide is even more brutally piercing- its corners are sharp, shrieking, petulant, and dense. Consider it the sonic equivalent of a beautiful case of seasonal affective disorder during a locust invasion it's raining murder. To create that patented quicksand cocoon, he uses sundry effects and pedals, cello, guitar classical acoustic and electric and bass, keyboards, an army of drum machines, and some mics to capture his brilliant howl. Caveat: If Subliminal Genocide's your first black metal album, you might find it a bit repetitious. It's not. Listen closely. Subliminal Genocide by Xasthur, released 19 November 2018 1. Mash
This is the best songwriting that Xasthur has done in his entire discography, considering that alot of it revolves around atmospheric doom-drone with some melody shifts here and there. In fact, I'd say this is his best release unless you like the no-fi touch that his debut album had 'Nocturnal Poisoning'. 'Trauma Will Always Linger', 'Arcane and Misanthropic Projection', 'Through a Trance of Despondency' and 'Loss and Inner Distortion' are some of the highlights on the record and goddamn they are good. 'Prison of Mirrors' and 'Subliminal Genocide' are classic black metal tracks which some fine production that sounds like a recording from Hell.

The thing about this record is that it doesn't carry on forever and rather gets in your face with some creepy and often depressing lyricism with the shade of melodic riffs. The drumming on this record is a weak point, but it is compensated with the atmosphere and it is one of Scott's most moody releases. It doesn't sound like overcompressed, heavily distorted, banshee screams mixed in with muddy nails on a chalkboard but rather has a distinct style that paints a great composition.

Malefic's voice is quite powerful and doesn't rain in the background but rather adds some feeling to the LP that makes you think you just experienced being tortured and molested in a cell on Guantánamo Bay to death then brought back in the afterlife of the ninth circle of Dante's Inferno. With all metaphors and idioms aside, I can say this is a terribly frightening record that produces some pretty dreadful thoughts.

I have the grey/black splatter variant. I bought a new, sealed copy and there is only one printed inner sleeve, the c/d disc came in a clear sleeve with a small insert that included lyrics to Prison of Mirrors. Does that sound right?
