Woods of Desolation is an anonymous Australian black metal project based out of Sydney, New South Wales. The project revolves around the songwriting and instrumentation of a musician known only as D. A revolving line-up of vocalists, bassists and drummers have also assisted in the project which has never performed live. The Australian group Woods of Desolation, piloted by a musician known simply as D. complete the shift from depressive black metal to something brighter and more refined on their third album, As the Stars. As with Deafheaven, post rocks builds and joyous crescendos make up a huge part of the compositions, lending a triumphal feel to the overarching despair. Known as D. the musician behind Woods of Desolation has been a prolific member of the Australian metal community for years, gaining notoriety for two now discontinued projects, Forest Mysticism and Grey Waters with Tim Yatras of Germ. Australias Woods of Desolation have shown an evolution from one side of the fence to another, but the band has never fully committed to solely one style. The tremolo-laden leads do often crest in a whirring state of bliss, bringing forth an optimism that counteracts the crushing production and buzzing rhythms in a way that brings the old and the new tightly together. As The Stars succeeds because it knows that it cannot function without embracing both sides of its personality. Without the production and the mix, the album will be sonically sterile, and yet without the unorthodox mood variances the atmosphere would be lifeless. One-man project Woods of Desolation formed in 2005 from Wollongong, Australia, led by guitaristbassist D. Their third full-length album As the Stars would be set to air on Valentine's Day 2014, a fitting date for the release of a depressive black metal record. The best aspect of As the Stars is definitely its strong sense of atmosphere. From Like Falling Leaves to Ad Infinitum, every last track has a high abundance of that raw but thick atmosphere that makes the black metal genre so powerful to begin with.
