Wolfgang Rihm: Et Lux. Et Lux, für vokalensemble und streichquartett. Wolfgang Rihm. Huelgas Ensemble, Paul Van Nevel, Minguet Quartett. Et Lux is a classical and choral studio album by German composer Wolfgang Rihm, and played by an orchestra with the Huelgas Ensemble with the Minguet Quartett. This album was released in the label ECM New Series in March 2015. Like the Rihm's part on the Requiem of Reconciliation, this album is a rework of the Roman Catholic mass for the dead. In Et Lux he used few part of the mass, especially the one used to pray for eternal light for the deceased. On the album, the conductor, Paul Van Nevel, doubled. Wolfgang Rihm Artist Format: Audio CD. 0 out of 5 stars 1 rating. Wolfgang Rihm, that prolific composer of over 400 works, wrote this piece of chamber music in 2006 but it was only recently recorded by the Huelgas Ensemble and the Minguet String Quartett. Devotees of Rihm know this young quartet very well indeed since they have recorded all of his string quartets with his blessings and often participation. But I would categorize this as a choral work with string quartet accompaniment - just to keep the focus clear. Et Lux is a 2009 composition for voices and string quartet in which Rihm dwells on certain phrases of the Latin death mass particularly the notion of eternal light, which he calls comforting yet deeply disturbing. The same could be said of Et Lux as a whole. Tropes waft in from across the ages: this music treads the line of tangibility, with sudden rushes of anger or fondness and the messy half-memories that come with grief. The strings complete phrases that the singers cant seem to summon. Rihm, Wolfgang : Et Lux, for chorus & string quartet. Van Nevel, Paul. American Record Guide, SeptemberOctober 2015 Et Lux 2009, for vocal ensemble and string quartet, is an hour-long deconstruction of the Requiem mass incinerated into hallucinatory reminiscences by an early music-specialist choral group and a string quartet making like an avant-garde viol ensemble. The choral writing is generally more diatonic and is intended to produce distant memory of the erstwhile style. Wolfgang Rihm: Et Lux by Rihm, Wolfgang on CD. In his poignant and hallucinatory 2009 composition Et Lux, the German composer Wolfgang Rihm creates a shifting expressive landscape around that cultural memory, one that alternates between passages of bleary dissonance and sudden bursts of crisp focus. The hour-long piece is scored for vocal ensemble the eight-voice Huelgas Ensemble and string quartet the Minguet Quartet, and it rambles through a sort of long memorial elegy
