Wilson Pickett was one of the most consistently strong performers of the great soul era of the 1960's, but like most R&B artists of the period he was strongest in his singles, not his albums, and while he cut some fine long-players in his day, a quality compilation is still the best place to get started with The Wicked. Originally released in 1973 as a two-LP set, Wilson Pickett's Greatest Hits got an upgrade to CD in the mid-1980's, and while it's value has since been supplanted by the more efficient The Very Best Of Wilson Pickett and the more thorough A Man and a Half: The Best Of Wilson Pickett, this still pulls together twenty-four. Wilson Pickett Format: Audio CD. Near the end, he adds the Wilson Pickett screams, prolonging the series of screams a bit too long for me. I've heard another Wilson Pickett version of this song that I thought wandered so far from the original Beatles song that I found it far less enjoyable than this version. This album was a great pleasure to listen to. It brought back memories of the late sixties and early seventies. Anthony DeCurtis. Born in 1941 in Alabama, Pickett got his start singing gospel, a style that is still apparent in early tunes such as I Found a Love and If You Need Me. But he fully came into his own in 1965, when he went to Memphis to record at Stax. Backed by the MGs and the Mar-Keys, he defined a dramatic sound in which terse horn phrases, an infallible rhythm section and Steve Croppers spindly guitar lines accentuated the inexorable force of his vocals. Wilson Pickett March 18, 1941 January 19, 2006 was an American singer and songwriter. A major figure in the development of American soul music, Pickett recorded over 50 songs which made the US R&B charts, many of which crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100.
