As I hoped, Olympias disc of Shebalins First and Third Symphonies 496 now has a sequel, and a very welcome one it is. I gave a thumbnail sketch of Shebalins qualities in my previous review, and the main works on the new disc confirm his status as a serious-minded but problematic symphonist. The Russian Overture dates from 1941 and is presumably an immediate patriotic reaction to the Nazi insurgency. Heroic intonations abound, but Shebalin does not lose sight of craftsmanly principles, at least not until his peremptory tokenist conclusion. Russian Overture, Symphonies nos. GB1997. The Russian Overture from 1941 that opens the program is appropriately triumphalist for the occasion, I suppose yet this is no mere hollow occasional work. The main ideas are strong, and Shebalin uses them effectively yes, the overall spirit of the work is one of triumph and optimism, but triumph does not come without effort and struggle. The second movement is energetic and busy, characterized by ever-changing textures and colors, remarkable moments and some pretty stirring, uneasily wistful final pages - before a rather surprising, positive conclusion.
