Viktor Krauss is an American musician who plays acoustic and electric bass. He has released solo albums and has worked as a sideman with many musicians, including his sister, singer and fiddler Alison Krauss. Krauss was born and raised in Champaign, Illinois. As a boy, he enjoyed listening to soundtracks. He started on piano and trumpet before moving on to playing double bass with local jazz groups in his early teens. In high school, he began composing music and was influenced by rock, soul. Which is probably why his second album, II, feels so drizzly and deep blue. Krauss was apparently fascinated with movie soundtracks as a child, and it shows this is a film noir of an album, a disembodied soundtrack, a piece of music that displays such a diversity of mood and genre that it feels cinematic. The brother of bluegrass superstar Alison, he's recorded with Lyle Lovett, Jerry Douglas, Chet Atkins, and Emmylou Harris. Yet in 2004 he authored a nearly perfect album of ambient Americana, Far from Enough, that was full of delicately shaded instrumental moods and electrically charged textures. Much of that came from Jerry Douglas and guitarist Bill Frisell, who were both all over the disc. Frisell, with whom Krauss often plays, is only on a couple of tracks here.
