I got into Waldeck when I heard Ballroom Stories. I love the lounge feel, the melodies, the hypnotic beats and the timeless sound which is so modern yet could be from the twenties. Waldeck's Gramophone sounds to me kind of like a compilation of the influences that led Waldeck to make Ballroom Stories. There's old tunes that might have been played and sung in French cabaret bars that display the exact sound and feel of some of Waldeck's newer tunes. There are some Waldeck produced tunes that fit in with those but are completely up to date. If you love the hypnotic electronic Waldeck, such as found on Balance of the Force or Northern Lights, the jazz tracks might seem weird at first but after a couple of listens I found myself wanting to hear more of the old jazz tracks. Waldeck lovers will love this album even if they only like the old stuff as a one-off curiosity. It's an education as well as a pleasure to listen to and might open up a whole new world of sound for some. For me, it's inspired me to listen to more Waldeck and seek out more Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, Sidney Bechet and other stuff from that era.
