Tahiti has long been called Island of Paradise, and with complete justification. The islands lay undiscovered by western man until the 18th century, and the people developed a remarkable civilization and sophistication of their own.

But the physical appearance of Tahiti bears out every claim ever made by dreamers, philosophers, and writers regarding Paradise. Soft white sand along the shore is washed by crystal blue-green water. Puffy white clouds float serenely in bright blue sky. Graceful palms curve up toward the heavens from the grassy earth.

And the people-exquisitely turned examples of men and women. Tahiti's natives are bronzed, regular of feature, dark-eyed, and exotically handsome. There is a grace and elegance to their movements and to their lives. Their music mirrors this essential sophistication.

While MGM's huge crew of actors and technicians were filming "Mutiny On The Bounty," the magic of Tahiti snared them all. They fell in love with the brilliant sunsets and the pastel nights, the surf and sun as well as the breeze and bright moonlight. They came to know and love the music of the island.

Gaston Guilbert set up recording facilities in Papeete and captured the live sound of Tahiti's music. The songs are a mixture of love songs and native chants. Through them all runs a gentle strain of melody that is characteristic of the people and life in Tahiti.
