The New Style also known as It's the New Style is a song by American hip hop group the Beastie Boys, released as the third single from their debut album Licensed to Ill. The famous line from the song was later sampled in other hip hop songs, including The Pharcyde's Drop 1995, OutKast's Benz or a Beamer, and by the Beastie Boys themselves on their single Intergalactic 1998. Furthermore, the opening line was sampled on the tracks Workinonit and The New by J Dilla, the

New Beat as a genre is for many older DJ's like me the Arsenal where we keep a lot of Secret weapon. With devastatingly simple hypnotic electronic grooves combined with often edgy, sleazy, druggy samples it takes modern listeners back to a more simple yet dangerous time. This was a time when grooves were for dancing pure and simple and uninvited working class kids were gatecrashing jet-set discotheques and taking tunes and chemicals back home with them. The first track Total Recall sets out the blueprint. Thumping Roland bass drum, with driving bassline and electro marimba top line that feels more familiar than you thought it should. The tribal vocal sample and Kraftwerk like melody complete a stormer. Second track Acid Queen is pure Chicago House BUT made by mad Belgians blending sleazy samples with a relentless groove. Cocaine by The Maxx is a track you have heard before, haven't you? Maybe but where? FM Synth Line and manipulated samples have been used to devastating effect by many DJ's over the years. Are you sure you should be grooving to this? C-O-caine? I love fourth track Body Heat and thankfully it manages to stay the right side of cheese on the samples, can only be dropped on the discerning and history aware dance floors. voices by Neon however is a killer tune. When a DJ drops this hammering Drum track with esoteric synth line it is a statement of INTENT. Sometimes used to cleanse a dance floor but more often used to hammer the groovers into place so they are yours for the night. Taste of Sugar is another blueprint New Beat track with more than enough going on sonically to attract dancers into the vortex. I LOVE this track on a big system. Its sleazy samples top off the compositions well. What more can be said of track 7 Amnesia - Ibiza? If you ever danced in the open air in the late 80's around the pyramid before the roof went onto the club of the same name this is going to take you back in time better than a time machine. If not just imagine this tune belting out of a quality system with a mixed crowd of the coolest people you have never met - loco! Even Now by L&O follows somewhat of a generic nu-beat template but the diversity of its hypnotic elements combine to mean that they become more than the sum of their parts. Every time I heard this track I kick myself for not playing it out more often. Damn why? Thebassline DRIVES hypnosis FOREVER. Always wish it had a big crescendo ending. New Beat Mind by Public Relations is downbeat compared to the former tracks but much of New Beat was this. Druggy, late session, sun coming up chugging grooves that deliberately brought you down again or, if played early set the scene for a night of carnage. Always thought this track could / should have been voiced by Peter Murphy of Bauhaus - In my fantasy video of the track it always IS - GIANT Track. Played this at a fashion show and it created a total scene. Heads were in shock when I told them it was an 1988 track. What more can be said at Bryllyant played at 33 and 1/3 +8%. Sometimes the world needs happy accidents like this. Legend has it the DJ first played the track at the wrong speed them compounded the problem by pitching it up to hide his error. Thank god he did - We all know there is only one way to play this track. CD Bonus track (a) Bocasaurus is a fitting tribute to the club of the same name. You know a club is seminal when a tribute track is made and New beat deserves its very own track that is just the right side of genre pastiche.. Just make sure your mix out by 4:30 as the last section is - well if you know the track - you know what I am saying. Bonus track (9) is my secret weapon so you never play that out its mine. If I see anyone voicing the lyrics to this at a gig I will play the entire rest of the night for them. Its just a New beat thing right.... Finally last bonus track (c) Public Relations by Public relations is a track I don't play much. Its a filler that the compilation doesn't deserve. All in all a great document of a scene at its peak. Enjoy
