Various Artists. Motown's Great Interpretations. A fake concept album featuring Motown artists singing the hits of others - fake because all the songs were recorded years earlier and were album cuts for the artists. Motown simply assembled them on one LP and called them great interpretations. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' I Heard It Through the Grapevine is flaccid and uninspiring. Diana Ross' I Love You Call Me doesn't compare to Aretha Franklin's, and the Dynamic Superiors' Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing is overblown and campy. The label quickly signed artists who would make a huge impact. Gordy had written hits for Jackie Wilson in the 50s and knew something about what made great records, so his A&R instincts were strong. The Motown sound was also meant to be modern, urban and slick: theres not much blues in Motowns rhythmnblues, but theres heaps of rhythm. It gave the company an identity, and though its artists retained their vocal distinctiveness and the songs told their own stories, you knew where this music was coming from. Every Great Motown Song - The First 25 Years Vol. 1:The 1960's. A year later, she was Motown's first female artist to hit the Top 40 and, after scoring three consecutive hits with songs written and produced by Smokey Robinson, its first solo star. Two Lovers, a No. 1 R&B hit in 1962, sold a million copies and her album went Top 10, establishing her as the label's biggest star at the time. Mary Wells My Guy Wells, Motown's first female star, teamed with up songwriter Smokey Robinson on a number of hits, but none would top the No. 1 My Guy, on which Wells declares loyalty to her man despite others knocking on her door. I'm sticking to my guy like a stamp to a letter, she notes. Like birds of a feather, we stick together. 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: Motown 1970s, Vol
