This 1951 recording of George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess was the first complete recording of the work from beginning to end, not a series of selections of popular songs from the work. Norm Lewis - from the London and Broadway revivals of LES MISERABLES - was an impressive Porgy, and David Alan Grier, best known for his comedic roles on film and television, but also a recent Broadway star in David Mamets RACE, was the embodiment of Sportin Life. Gershwin died just after he finished his masterpiece Porgy and Bess, now performed in a new production by the New York Metropolitan Opera. Gershwin's first piano teacher referred to him as a genius, and history has concurred. From his early years he was a virtuoso pianist, producing hundreds of piano rolls. Gershwin was a dominant figure in the pantheon of the composers of popular songs and jazz standards, making up the Great American Songbook from the 1920s to the 1950s, who ranged from Irving Berlin to Cole Porter. This is a piece that Gershwin took a full 11 months to compose and nine months to orchestrate, all based on the initial inspiration from a drama written by playwright Dorothy Heyward.
