IMHO, very nice to see Kosmos getting away from all that minimal droll, as I personally find this EP (referring to this sampler, not the whole LP which I haven't heard yet) to be their best stuff since the early days of the label. All tunes are great in their own right, and "Gonna Make you Move Tonight" grew on me eventually, as upon first listen I couldn't help but conjure up similarities to one of the worst tunes in DnB history, Mr Jonny L's "UGH, lemme see you shake in your boots, going back to the old school back to your roots". But the steppy cowbell and vocals grew on me, enough to make it a guilty pleasure. "The Bass, the Amen, and the Scratch" has exactly that as the foundation to the tune, making it more like an exercise in 'DnB Production 101', but nonetheless a rinser and very fun tune to double-drop and cross fade. The real magic of this 12" occurs on the B-side, as "Hesitate" grows out of a two-step break and beautiful pads, then a twisted bass drops in and the tune changes up and switches heavily from there. A great energetic dancefloor tune with its origins in late-90's atmospheric. Watch out for that synthed-out guitar! Which leads me to the track of all tracks, the epic choon to smash all epic choons... "Thunders of Mars". I won't even bother describing it, as you need to listen to it ASAP! Just make sure your ceiling is high enough to allow for jumping up n down like a maniac. Amen devastator!! Great all around EP which makes me excited to hear the full album, and a step in the right direction (IMHO) for Kosmos to get back to what DnB/jungle is all about...breaks, bass, energy, originality, and heads bobbing with hands held high.
