Big Band, Free Jazz, Swing. June 30, 2019. Producer John Hammond was always a major proponent of integration and of recognizing the greatness of the top African-American jazz artists. While still in his late twenties, he presented two groundbreaking concerts at Carnegie Hall on Dec. 23, 1938 and Dec. Because Hammond fortunately recorded most of the two concerts, a two-LP set was put out by the Vanguard label in the late 1950s and later reissued. In 1999 a definitive three-CD box set, titled From Spirituals To Swing, was released that included the original selections plus all of the previously unreleased performances. From Spirituals to Swing was the title of two concerts presented by John Hammond in Carnegie Hall on 23 December 1938 and 24 December 1939. The concerts included performances by Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Big Joe Turner and Pete Johnson, Helen Humes, Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, Mitchell's Christian Singers, the Golden Gate Quartet, James P. Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy and Sonny Terry. Although this John Hammond-produced concert was billed as the 30th Anniversary, it actually took place 28 years after his original Spirituals to Swing concert. Count Basie, Big Joe Turner and an obviously ill Pete Johnson were back from the earlier event. The two-LP set has spirituals Marion Williams, blues Big Mama Thornton and Turner, new stars George Benson and John Handy and a few swing all-stars including trumpeter Buck Clayton, clarinetist Edmond Hall and tenor-saxophonist Buddy Tate.
