Rhythm and Roots presents ‘A Guide to the Birdsong of South America’, a crowdfunded, non-profit album of music inspired by birdsong. The compilation challenged some of South America's most talented young musicians to create a piece of music inspired by the song of an endangered bird from their country.
The ten artists from from across the continent were each given an original recording of their chosen birdsong and used it as the basis for a new composition. Some took inspiration from the song itself, others from the bird's colourful plumage, while some like Lulacruza found a deeper connection, going back to the band's ancestral roots and fusing their modern folklore with birdsong and the local indigenous language.
The project aims to raise awareness about the plight of these birds but also to raise funds for those working to protect them. All of the proceeds from the album sales will be donated to two Ecuadorian birding organisations Aves y Conservación and Fundación Jocotoco. The 11 species featured on this album are amongst the most threatened in South America with many considered to be Critically Endangered by the IUCN's Red List. It is crucial that their fast disappearing homes are protected to ensure these beautiful species and their enchanting songs survive for future generations.
Rhythm and Roots worked with the wonderfully talented designer and illustrator Scott Partridge who created a series of unique interpretations of each species. These were turned into a series of limited edition A3 prints and a set of 11 postcards, one for each of our featured birds. Scott also designed the incredible front and back cover art for the digital and vinyl album.
'A Guide to the Birdsong of South America' will be released on March 3rd 2015 via Rhythm and Roots and you can now pre-order the digital download, vinyl album, limited edition prints, postcard set or an organic, fair trade T-shirt.
