Gqom pronounced Gome is a blistering variant of South African house which finds its roots in the coastal city of Durban. Like lots of the home-brewed genres of music in South Africa and beyond, a treasure trove of tracks is easily available on the Internet. The 15 tracks that compose Sounds of Durban Vol. 1 successfully capture the very essence of gqom: the rough-and-tumble vibe, the impressionistic and asymmetrical kickdrums, the hypnotic chanting, and the music's brash youthfulness. A year later they've co-founded the record label Gqom Oh and have released their first full-length release, The Sound of Durban Vol. New label Gqom Oh goes back further than that EP, to January of 2015, when Italian DJ Nan Kolé stumbled on a SoundCloud stream with the gqom tag. He fell into a world of music that he, and practically everyone else outside Durban, didn't know existed. Employing his friend Lerato Phiri as a South African point of contact, Kolé dug deeper into the scene, aiming to shed light on the artists making gqom without exploiting them or appropriating their sound. The Sound Of Durban is a marathon gauntlet of throbbing grooves and pounding drums, and it's rarely anything less than pure pleasure. These tunes approach gqom from a number of angles. The Sound of Durban Vol. 1 represents the first full length compilation collecting the sound of the suburbs and townships of Durban, South Africa known as gqom. The album unites many of the local young producers of this fresh genre over 15 tracks on double LP and digital with four bonus tracks released via the Gqom Oh label on 29th January 2016.
