As reviewed by me in February 1994:

Yes, once again Virgin scoops up a smattering of their back catalogue, this time thinking it's excusable to call this a lesson in ambient music as long as they put in the liner notes that they realize it's a compilation of music from their own label. The fact that this is almost totally a profit-driven venture really takes away from my enjoyment of the great music on this 150 minute tour. It's also unfortunate that they picked out some newer material that really isn't all that ambient just for the sake of promoting their new releases—examples: Jam Nation (a RealWorld supergroup), The Grid, and Verve. William Orbit's old Bass-o-matic project doesn't really qualify, either. Nothing sounds that out of place, but the lack of continuity makes this more just a collection of tracks than a proper album. At least they mastered the tracks with a couple seconds of overlap so there are no gaps. There are some great cuts on it too... in particular, the Daevid Allen piece really grabbed me.

What I do like about these collections is the richness of the pre-techno-era tracks. Ambient music made with processed acoustic and electric instruments has a quality lacking in more modern synth-and-sample oriented works. It's worth having, but don't pay too much for this; if you are in the US you may want to wait for the domestic edition which will probably be out in a few months. A Brief History of Ambient volume 1 will be out 22 Feb 1994.

Volume 2 doesn't get the attention its sexy and "difficult" younger sibling Volume 4 gets but its the eclectic harbinger of what was to come in the series.
With volume 1 having taken care of the obvious ambient touchstones that had to be part of any serious ambient retrospective ie: Tangerine Dream, Eno's "an ending (ascent)" etc, Volume 2 could start to look in strange places and uncover the less obvious strains of Ambient Music.
We have early Verve when they were experimenting with MBV-like washes of guitar. an often overlooked Dub mix of a track from PiL's seminal metal box (Not Another aka: another aka: Graveyard)
A Georgian Choir features on Volume 2, as does some epic guitar noise from God.
in a stroke of genius Bass-O-Matic's "attack of the 50 foot drum demon" is rendered ambient by clever use of mastering - something unthinkable with todays mostly awful mastering of Compact Discs.
the lack of the track splitting issues, misspressings or track listing mistakes that affected other volumes in the series also help make this feel special
