Hospital Productions tape compilations always feel like they are hiding something from the listener, some buried strand of mystery connecting each piece of music. This particular four-cassette-gems title reference to Machiavelli makes this explicit , pointing out some complex act of duplicity that will be revealed within, each artist having a hand in crafting something devious. Here he makes a glacial transition from a glowing orb drone fed through unsettling subharmonics that slowly consume their surroundings, whilst the other side flirts with a more tranquil variant that ebbs and undulates with a barely perceptible pulse - that thing that Drumm does like no other. and serrated guitar jabs with an aching sense of restraint View more. The book slices human history into time blocks, and provides snapshots of the world during each period. Its not a sleep-inducing recital of kings, empires, wars, and dates. With the devlopment of maritime skills and firepower, Western civilizations were able to colonize various parts of the world pg 155-212. I have been blessed with the dark twin of the 'Clamshell' edition. I love this chance selection stuff at Boomkat (most appreciated with the Demdike Stare 'At Rest' art piece).Anyway, this 4x LP selection is clawing it's way under my psychological skin as we speak. The most immediate stand out is Lussuria's take upon the Ambient genre, a suite of decayed and rotting synthesis that, as a whole, claws back some form of sonic optimism through the sonic miasmah of this dense and dark release.'Indigo Window Along Those Steps' presents 8 tracks that come across like an empty and broken Boards of Canada. The vibe just cannot pull itself out of the mire although the sun is in sight. It's like an eternal yearning that will not go away. Alessandro Cortini's workings 'Callimaco/Ligurio' are 2 long pieces (a side each) that create a sense of dread and concern through minimal, but effective means. Undulating analogue synth scores and sounds slowly building to cancel out any pretense of calm and gentle ambience (this is an Ambient compilation remember). Like calm sea's becoming tempestuous and like soft waves of sound slowly decaying into noise. A comparison to life no doubt. Kevin Drumm's 'Middle of Nothing' describes just that. Extended guitar(?) drone pieces 4 in all that appear shear and clean and minimal at first but further listening is warranting something else. I need a bit more time to digest this but thats what makes this work so compelling! Regis/Prurient give us a form of 'inverse' techno with 'Family Configuration/The Eternal Laws'. 2 sides of sonic tension ratcheted up to the nth degree. Kind of black hole stuff here. Look into the void and the void looks back. If ever there was 'Ambiance With Teeth' then this double sided play off is it. The agony is indeed the ecstasy. Not sure I feel about the alternate artworks. Hopefully I get the vintage clam shell one. The Norelco one looked more like a Bed of Nails release IMO. Regardless, I'm obviously more excited about the music.So.. I got the vintage clamshell one. Be sure to have a screw driver or letter opener handy to pry tapes 1/2 out lest your finger me 1mm wide. 'Lussuria- Indigo Widow Along Those Steps' is my favorite on this compilation. Perfectly flowing and mesmerizing tape. beautiful sounding, lush, and deep. Immediately wanted to listen again. Indigo Widow is lighter and easily digested by the ears than his previous works. Scarlet Locust felt more sinister, oppressive and moody. Allesandro Cortini's is my least favorite on here.. its low down and dirty analog noise tape. The A side 'Calliwaco' moves at a snails pace and I was finally getting into the zone when it was coming to an end. The B side 'Ligurio' is less restrained, harsher and heavier. I enjoyed that one more. I listened to this tape on 3 sets of speakers, it was best heard on JBL 4406 monitors that are have a rich/detail in the mid and high range, with crappy speakers this tape will probably just sound like rumbling..Nice to see Allesandro moving in a different direction than his past work, love the atonal choices. Regis and Prurient collaboration tape was a nice surprise. Well executed dark ambient/atmosphere/industrial pieces. Doesn't sound like typical solo material from either artist, worth checking out. Wish it was longer, hope to hear more of this collab.Kevin Drumm's reminds me of 'Imperial Distortion' at times, maybe reduced even. as with most of his work, its drone and intricate/slowly evolving material, I'll have to give it another listen, excellent. Side Note also Bookmat states this: "Lussuria takes the 3rd tape with “Indigo Window Along Those Steps", committing his first new music since his brilliant Industriale Illuminato album from 2014." He released Scarlet Locust of These Columns in 2015, which was one of my favorites of the year. Leave it to bookmat for the incorect info -_-All great contributions, solid start of 2016 for Hospital Productions.

There is no insert with the vintage clamshell one, so as bookmat pictured it. I love me some inserts though ;) meh..

How does the artwork vary in the Norelco box? Obviously it looks completely different, but do either versions come with booklets, foldouts, inserts? Or is it simply what we're seeing on boomkat is what we're getting? (I'm thinking about the Prurient/Burning Star Core "Ghosts of Niagara" clamshell that shipped with a booklet in the rear panel.)

I think both designs are well made.. My opinion is based from a branding perspective. its interesting to see 2 entirely different artworks. Labels will usually use 1 type face/font and style of artwork for a certain period of time, I'm sure you've seen this. And also the fact that some people will want both artworks (I don't) meaning 2x the sales.. But yes, I should have asked and ignored their 'shipped at random' line... lol.

Both look great to me..But if you wanted one of both specifically, you could have asked with your order..A lot of people did ask, and got the one they wanted..Me, i left it to chance..To tell the truth, with all those box sets these days, i am really, really low on space, so the norelco case might fit it better :P
