Various Artists Tropicália: ou Panis et Circensis 1968. This is the manifesto and benchmark of the Tropicália movement, the album that formed the group and gave it its name. Gathering a variety of musicians and bands, including Caetano Veloso , Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé, Gal Costa, and Rogério Duprat with band Os Mutantes, Tropicália is a whos who of some of the most important musicians in Brazil over the past 50 years. The fusion of genres of Tropicália drew him to its orbit, and his 1969 eponymous album is the best example of this tropicalista period, bringing some jazzy beats and tempos to lyrics that satirize Brazilian politics and society. Tropicália was a revolution, a movement of subversion and beauty that swept Brazil in the late 1960s. It was a vivid, multi-disciplinary blossom, ranging from poetry to films, theater to visual art. Velosos debut album, with the song Tropicália, kicked it off in earnest, and more artists released their musical manifestos a few months later on the compilation Tropicália: ou Panis et Circencis, which juxtaposed their takes on samba with jarring song structures and experimentation. Only years later, when David Byrne wrote the liner notes for The Best of Tom Zé, everyone found out what the image on the album cover really was. Various The Best Of Tropicalia.
