Forty-track compilation by some of 1992s alternative hitmakers performing their favorite number one hits from the previous forty years. This was released in the UK in celebration of New Musical Express' 40th Anniversary. Proceeds from the album went to the fight against Cerebral Palsy. (According to one online review, they name Mixmaster Morris as the man behind the artist selection – to be verified).
NME's Senior Editor Terry Staunton masterminded the magazine's 40th anniversary charity album, which brought us the first Top Ten hit by Manic Street Preachers and the last Top 20 hit by The Farm.

Ruby Trax - The NME's Roaring Forty is a compilation album released by the magazine NME in 1992 to commemorate 40 years of publication. The album features 40 cover versions of classic Number 1 songs by popular bands of the era, though technically not all of the songs such as Ultravox's Vienna recorded by Vic Reeves were number ones. It was released in the following formats: three LPs NME40LP, three CDs NME40CD or two cassettes NME40MC, all having a total of 40 songs. So where does one start in this massive, 40-strong compilation of bad guitar pop, shambolic experimentation, homage, and insult How about in heart of the matter - the second disc has the best treats anyway. With a reviled yet strangely delightful take on Maggie May, Blur once again demonstrates their guttural gifts for pop and, not to be outdone, Kingmaker gets sent out on a rail unleashing the same Buzzcocks spunk that Supergrass would get lauded for years later.
