The only live document of Sonny Sharrock's comeback of the late '80s, Live in New York is a mixed bag of a record. Consisting of material from his recent Seize the Rainbow album along with one cut from the nearly impossible to find Dance With Me, Montana record, one from Guitar, and a pair of blues vocal pieces. I saw him three times at the original Knitting Factory in NYC, and each time he played, the ceiling and walls would collapse as he would reduce the club to rubble. This CD, the first of at least four, has ten performances by eight varied groups recorded at the innovative New York club. The music ranges from advanced jazz to sound explorations, avant-rock, performance art and a bit of noise. The Jazz Passengers and Curlew are the best-known groups while some of the others such as Scanners and Miracle Room have not been heard from since. There are some misses among these selections but overall the music is quite stimulating. The album resembles the missing link between John Zorn's work with Masada and Naked City.
