Info
The World of Oz was an English psychedelic pop band who released a sole self-titled LP in 1968, before fading into relative obscurity, although CD re-issues of the album are now widely available to the public. The band formed in January 1968 and signed to Deram Records on 13 February 1968. Their song, The Muffin Man, was a minor hit in the UK and US and reached the Top 10 in a number of European countries, including the Netherlands and Belgium. Publicity for the single in the US was constrained. Psychedelic Rock Baroque pop. World Of Oz. Original Release on Deram Label UK 2006 Remastered Bonus Tracks: 13-20. The World of Oz LP was released on schedule and disappeared without creating a ripple on the charts, on either side of the Atlantic. The album cover was a very strange one - it featured visual representations of the last lineup of the group, which was understandable but also strange, as World of Oz. The sound quality is most impressive, however, and given the sheer rarity of the original LP, the chances of anyone having the latter already lying around to be heard are next to non-existent - so this CD ends up being essential listening for almost anyone fascinated by the commercial side of British psychedelia. When taken in this context, The World of Oz's only album not only makes a lot more sense, it's also pretty good and easy to appreciate as a well-crafted collection of pop songs. Really, the album's cover gives a bit of the wrong impression-aside from the artwork which delightfully reproduces a plethora of characters from the Wizard of Oz books, the band and the songs have absolutely nothing to do with the Wizard of Oz. In fact, in comparison with many other British psych bands, these guys aren't quite as psychedelic as they are marketed. The World of Oz were a British psychedelic pop band that enjoyed a short string of successful singles in Europe. Between those major charting records in Holland and a lot of good press at home, the release of an album was planned - yet they managed to throw it all away with an unexplained split. All four original members - Tony Clarkson bass, vocals, David Kubie Kubinec organ, Christopher Robin guitar, piano, vocals, and David Reay drums - hailed from Birmingham, and had been parts of that city's burgeoning poprock culture for varying amounts of time. Clarkson had
