Lovegod is an album by the Soup Dragons, released on 12 July 1990. Four songs from the album were released as singles-Backwards Dog, Crotch Deep Trash, Mother Universe and I'm Free. The latter, a cover of a Rolling Stones cut from their 1965 album Out of Our Heads, made the top 5 in the UK charts. First pressings did not include I'm Free, but it was subsequently placed first on the re-release, which also dates to 1990. All songs by Sean Dickson except where noted. If Lovegod is where the Soup Dragons supposedly found their sound - and it is - they still hadn't fine-tuned it to the level it would reach in a few short years. This isn't to say that Lovegod isn't an enjoyable album, though in fact, it's quite the opposite: of the late-'80searly-'90s explosion of British rock bands who made danceable rock music, the Soup Dragon. Unfortunately, this was the Soup Dragons' most popular album. Despite that giddy late-1980s indierock-meets-electronic production style and loopy psychedelic club beatnik vibe, I now find it largely unappealing. On the positive side, there are some terrific guitar riffs, a handful of wonderful beats, some inspired samples including the HEAD soundtrack by The Monkees with the help of Jack Nicholson's dialogue collages from the film, but 's dragged down by the clunky songwriting, tiredtrite lyrics, and ill-suite.
