Mother's Little Helper is a song by the English rock band the Rolling Stones. It first appeared as the opening track to the United Kingdom version of their 1966 album Aftermath. It was released as a single in the United States and peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1966. The song deals with the sudden popularity of prescribed calming drugs among housewives, and the potential hazards of overdose or addiction. I always found it a tad hypocritical for the dreaded Rolling Stones' to be laying drug problems at the feet of your average housewife. Sort of like the pot calling the kettle black.
Still, for its time, it was a rather daring statement. After all these years, it's still painfully true that housewives still use their little "pickmeups" and "downers". Drug abuse is not just for the Stones. It's for everybody! So it remains an interesting song.
B-side is from the Stones' eclectic "Aftermath" lp. I still find "Lady Jane" one of the prettiest Stone's songs. Nicer than "Angie", nicer than "As Tears Go By". A solid single for the Stones!
