Factory Records recorded their debut single A Gentle Sound in 1986, followed by their first album, Reunion Wilderness in 1987, which topped the UK Indie Chart. Gary Newby's lead vocals and songwriting were top-notch. The rhythm guitar played by Brian Bateman simply shimmers, and, in retrospect, the rhythm section of Stephen Hull bass and Guy Keegan drums, percussion ranks up there with Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce of The Smiths. The Railway Children are one of the most overlooked and underrated bands ever. Too intelligible for the shoegazer movement, and not heavy enough for the changing alternative rock movement of their time, The Railway Children did not become a big commercial success. It has been adapted for the screen several times, of which the 1970 film version is the best known. The Railway Children is an alternative rock band from England. They are best known for their song Every Beat of the Heart, which peaked at 1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. In 1984, Gary Newby, Brian Bateman, Guy Keegan, and Stephen Hull formed The Railway Children. They signed to legendary Manchester record label, Factory Records and started to record their debut album Reunion Wilderness in 1987. They were signed to Virgin Records soon afterwards.
