Nothing personal
The syncopated bass line of What Evil Lurks is just amazing. Such a vital building block of The Prodigy's sound. Liam Howlett is a funk genius!

What Evil Lurks. Starts off well with the breakbeat and vocal sample but the bass line is annoying. Android is an amazing stomper of a beat!Everybody In The Place dancefloor killer. We Gonna Rock! OMFG what a heavy track for 1991!

Tyler Is Not Here
Was gutted when this got a reissue in 2004 and knocked about 500 quid off my original pressing's value. Was definitely the jewel in my prodigy collection back in the day when imho the Prodigy were still credible i.e. before all their current pop-punk nonsense.

Be careful when buying this because 'Hard to find' records booted it along with lots of others such as Expose - Tell me why & CeCe Rogers - Someday. I think the way to tell is the matrix in the run out wax starts with 'HTF' but the records themselves look identical

This record probably has changed my life - it was after The Fat of the land etc. I discovered their music once again from other side...I wish I wasn't 2 years old in 1991 or have a time machine to travel to early 90's raves :-) My friend gave on my b-day an original release it was a f-king best present ever. It does still sound great!

Throw her heart
Liam originally offered this tune to Tam Tam Records. As Liam had previously been in Cut 2 Kill, who had signed a deal with Tam Tam, he decided to offer it to them. They refused, and XL snapped it up instead.

This is by far and away THE best Prodigy release, every tune is an absolutely belting floorfiller. Me and Jason ripped Glasgow dancefloors with this back in the early 90's and it still does the damage today.

Aye, bit of a groundbreaker this one, although not that great it somehow managed to carve out a niche for Liam Howlet. I think they timed his next release perfectly, so as to catch whatever this first one had managed to do. Personally i think it caught the people who were getting bored with the way the scene was becoming overground, The Prodigy grabbed the scene Altern-8 had managed to stem, that almost comical but hard edged approach to hardcore and the whole drugs culture. And for the record (no pun inteneded) i had the original promo of this with photocopied press release inside, god knows whose got it now, prolly up in Nottingham with DJ Dizzy.

Mate I had to disagree with you on your review simply because you seem to have got your history in a muddle.Altern 8 had their first hit (Infiltrate 202) in July 1991, a full 6 months after this first release by The Prodigy. So what's all this talk about The Prodigy grabbing "a scene Altern 8 had managed to stem"?Besides, after this first release you could hardly say that The Prodigy were "underground", any more so than Altern 8!Oh and I also disagree that this release (the What Evil Lurks E.P.) "carved out a niche" for Liam Howlett. He was already making demos well before this was out on XL. If you're talking sustainable productivity, it took the success of Charly to kickstart his (financially worthwhile) career. Not really wanting to have a go or anything, just wanted to clear up a few details as a fellow Prodigy (but moreso Altern 8) fan. :P

Illegal or not, this EP absolutely kills it... this was what got me into techno in the first place. Quirky vocal samples, funky breaks, perfect twists and turns into the music... techno just had unlimited potential back then. This record would work any sort of dance floor today: "WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN!"

Where does it say it was limited to 10 copies?
The photos on here are of my actual copy and when i picked it up it was mint, the sticker over the center hadn't been broken through.
It was thought for quite a while that no promo copies for this release were issued but here it is...........
I let my mate mix with it and he had a habit of using his long nailed fingers to beat match.............which left marks on the record............hey ho, back then we were just enjoying the tunes.
Still got it here somewhere marks and all.
I was offered 500 euros for it a while ago but turned it down.
Where am i going to find another one?
Part of dance music history, and mine (now 47 years of age).
Might let it go one day for the right price!
;-)

The first time I heard this little gem from Liam Howlett in the early 90's it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when Android was Dropped. An absolute classic 4 track e.p from those Heavy Hardcore Dayz :-D
