The North Sea Scrolls is a collaborative project from Luke Haines, Cathal Coughlan, and Andrew Mueller which was performed live in 2011, with an album following in 2012. An alternative musical history of the British Isles, The North Sea Scrolls was originally performed at the Edge Festival in Edinburgh in August 2011. The premise behind the show is that historical documents showing a different version of history were passed to Haines and Coughlan by the actor Tony Allen. The show featured songs based. Kick Andrew Marr aside, and make way for The North Sea Scrolls. Luke Haines Auteurs and Cathal Coughlan Microdisney present an alternate history of the British Isles in song and spoken word. Its a world-turned-upside- down in which Oswald Mosley is Lord Protector and Jimmy Savile is the demon at the crossroads this was presumably written before the current scandal. Its deeply engrossing and rings resoundingly with cultural and historical truth. More about . The North Sea Scrolls. Critic Score. of the Scrolls. 15 Songs, 53 Minutes. History Will Teach Us Nothing
Two indie rock pillars – Cathal Coughlan and Luke Haines – decided two combine their creative efforts and The North Sea Scrolls is the striking result. The album sounds like the crazy cross of The Auteurs and Microdisney but there is also a heavy stress on cello masterfully played by Audrey Riley and that adds to the songs the atmosphere of the nineteenth century chamber music. “Brown-shirt swordsmen of Sydney Harbour put out to pasture in Dublin town, archbishop orders to seek and run those deserters down. It was in Boston, some call it London where exiles chose their hell, ignorant labour and foul cavorting, Frank, you teach them well… Witches in the water, we remember but forget, we love to eat the long pig, which we now, of course, regret.” The North Sea Scrolls are musically refined and politically engaged.
