This was a two LP version when it first came out but it was all put onto two regular length CD's: but there is only one standout actual music track and thats 'King Kong' coming in at 16:30 approximately total running time -and its in a bunch of parts like separate entities one after the other. Its a real burn from a musical point of view as if Frank Zappa was trying to berate people via the album-for buying the album. There are a whole bunch of Zappa "skits" (like small plays) strung together on the first three sides and the whole affair gets really old after about ten minutes of listening to two people repeating the phrase 'using a chicken to measure it' over and over again as if a conversation could be comprised of a series of meaningless questions and equally meaningless answers. Kind of a bummer I thought-maybe funny at first-but not after 30 minutes of it. This FZ communiqué from the often directionless counterculture he was part of won him a lot of strange people as fans but it also didn't win him many fans among the community of musicians. The guys in his band could play but they seemed to like to goof off more than anything. I think that this is the kind of record a lot of people would take back to where they bought it and ask for either a refund or an exchange when it first emerged. A rip off like that can hardly be said to be mocking blatant commerciality. FZ saw himself as a vanguard of creative genius-as if he represented "a kick in the pants of musical complacency"-but he was often the one being complacent. He did better albums later on-as in he was probably told to "shut up and play yer guitar" (the title of a later FZ work) or be 'set free from the burdens of being a recording artist.' Basically don't bother with this little piece of artsy-fartsy flotsam and jetsam unless you are a masochist. After being in the music business for decades FZ said that he didn't care if he influenced any subsequent generations of musicians. Probably because he had ultimately realized he wasn't really a positive influence.

One of the most idiotic reviews I've ever read. Pitiful. Everything on this album is a masterpiece.

Pretty good summary. I will go one further and add Zappa was probably being directed to NOT be a positive influence. But that's subjective anyways. Like how could anyone produce such a behemoth and get a chance to ever record again? He didn't own Waner Seven arts. Alot of social engineering was emerging out of the 60's and this is a prime example of the middle ground of nowhere's ville. This doesn't even contain any of the counter culture wit of "they're only in it for the money" which he pioneered just 2 years before. Maybe too much on his plate? But there is no doubt Zappa had some access and he used that access terribly. He's an ironic hypocritical character anyways - someone preaching down on other people using 'drugs' but then he's chainsmoking 'drugs' every moment of his day. Sorry Franky - cigarettes are the ultra efficient transport system of several drugs rolled in one. Cognitive dissonance, or haegealien dialectic...?
