Their sound contained elements of grunge distortion-heavy guitars, sneering vocals, but the Mono Men filtered these through a mimicry of 1960s Washington proto-punk, garage rock bands such as The Sonics. The Mono Men rose up from the ashes of another Washington band, the Roofdogs. John Mortensen came from the Dehumanizers and Game for Vultures before joining the Mono Men. Dave Crider on guitar, former guitarist Marx, Ledge Morrisette on bass and Aaron Roeder on drums, rose up from the ashes of another Bellingham, Washington band, The Roofdogs. Marx left the band and John Mortensen on vocals came from the Dehumanizers and Game for Vultures before joining the Mono Men. The Mono Men have always played up their adherence to '60s garage-rock, but quite often the group showcases a much heavier blues-rock sound. Perhaps it's the covers of the Sonics' The Witch and Billy Childish's Catalina and Lie Detector that lead to such an assertion, but even originals like Daylight and Right Now exhibit a rawer energy that was buried deep in the mix of Mono Men studio albums.
