Live Sweet Basil is a live album by jazz composer, arranger, conductor and pianist Gil Evans recorded by King Records Japan in New York in 1984 featuring Evans with his Monday Night Orchestra which included George Adams, Howard Johnson, and Lew Soloff and originally released in the US on the Gramavision label. Gil Evans' Monday night marathon sessions at Sweet Basil Jazz Club was originally a started as a workshop in April 1983 to select players and do rehearsals for preparing his Japan tour in. I like it somewhat better than Sweet Basil Volume 1, which is a little more stylistically uneven with some work bordering on pure rock, although I do like that album. The songs on this album tend to straddle the fence between electric fusion jazz and traditional bebop. To me, it's a great balance between the two. One of its great virtues is fine orchestration although you generally expect that from Gil Evans, and some incredible solos, e. the sax solo on Snowflake Bop.
